Enjoy a late autumn hike in the beautiful Japanese countryside !
Special field event “Nature and culture in the Japanese Satoyama countryside” will be held on 19th November, 2016.
In this outdoor event you will hike around traditional agricultural landscape at Yoshioka district where the order between Yotsukaidou City and Chiba City.
On this 6 km hike we will stroll leisurely along narrow country roads bordered by rice paddies, vegetable fields and oak woodlands rich in fruits and deep in autumn color. We will search for egrets, woodpeckers and other countryside birds; and learn how to catch and identify Japan’s famous “aka-tombo” red dragonflies. The hike includes visits to small local shrines and temples, where we will delve into Japan’s rich traditional folk spirituality. Lunch will be taken at a working farmstead with magnificent old wooden buildings.
The hike leader, Dr. Kevin Short, is a professor at nearby Tokyo University of Information Sciences. He has lived in Chiba Prefecture for more than 30 years, and is a bilingual expert on Japanese nature, folklore and spiritual culture.
